The old part of Sana'a is called Bab Al-Yemen, which means Gate of Yemen. And the gate you see above is the one they are referring to. The next three pictures show the architecture of the old buildings in and around old Sana'a. They are really quite amazing with their angles, white highlights and distinctive roof lines. This is a typical street scene with the women all in black. This building is typical with the small store fronts on the ground level and then dwellings or offices in the upper floors. Most street corners will have a policeman at it, but they don't often do anything. They seldom direct traffic and they never enforce any type of traffic laws. I guess they are there "just in case". This gives you and idea of the landscape around Sana'a. This is on the outskirts of town not too far away from where we live. Here, we are standing on a slightly elevated position in the road looking out across a portion of Sana'a. You can see some hills in the distance but they don't really give you an idea of the size of some of the mountains surrounding the city. They are not too close to the city as the plateau that houses the city is very large, but they get up to about 14,000 feet above sea level. Sana'a itself is at about 7,500 feet above sea level. There are some extremely large villas to be seen, such as the one above, so there is some money around, just not in the hands of the masses.
