UK MUSLIMS TO PROTEST AGAINST GERMAN AUTHORITIES’ HARASSMENT OF HIZB UT-TAHRIR

London, UK, January 15 – Hundreds of Muslims from all over the UK will be attending a demonstration this Tuesday (20 January 2004) at the London Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany, to protest against the continued harassment and intimidation of members and supporters of the well known non-violent Islamic political party, Hizb ut-Tahrir.

Demonstrators will deliver a letter to the German ambassador, Thomas Matussek, demanding an immediate end to Germany’s oppression of Muslims and intimidation of members and supporters of Hizb ut-Tahrir. Speakers at the demonstration will include Shaker Assem, the Representative of Hizb ut-Tahrir in Germany. The demonstration is taking place on the eve of the commencement of the appeal process against Germany’s decision to ban the activities of Hizb ut-Tahrir in Germany.

In recent cases, students in Germany have been ordered to spy on the Muslim community for German intelligence or face immediate deportation and businessmen have been threatened with the withdrawal of their trader’s licences unless they work for German intelligence. Academics working in German universities have been threatened with losing their jobs and deportation, rendering some of them stateless, for refusing to become spies for German intelligence and Muslim employees have been dismissed from their jobs after German police alleged, without evidence, that they were linked to terrorism.

Dr Imran Waheed, a UK based doctor and Representative of Hizb ut-Tahrir Britain, said, “In what is a ‘Krystalnacht’ for Muslims, Germany is using threats, intimidation and deportation to silence Hizb ut-Tahrir. We challenge the German authorities to open the doors of reason and end their intolerant secular crusade which will only serves to alienate Muslims.”

Shaker Assem, an engineer and Representative of Hizb ut-Tahrir in Germany said, “The German authorities know full well that Hizb ut-Tahrir works as an intellectual and political party and does not use any form of violence. However they are meeting the intellectual challenge of Islam with oppression.”

The demonstration will convene on Tuesday 20th January 2004 at 1.00 p.m. at the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany, 23 Belgrave Square, London, SW1X 8PZ. The letter to the German ambassador will be received by Max Maldacker, the First Counsellor for Political Affairs at the German Embassy.

    Notes to Editors:

    (1) Hizb ut-Tahrir is an independent political party whose ideology is Islam. The party works throughout the Islamic world to resume the Islamic way of life by re-establishing the Islamic Khilafah [Caliphate]. The party adheres to the Islamic Shari’ah in all aspects of its work. It considers violence or armed struggle against the regime, as a method to re-establish the Islamic State, to be forbidden by the Islamic Shari’ah. In the Western world, the party seeks to explain the Islamic ideology to Muslims, to create a dialogue with Western thinkers about Capitalism and its ills and to present Islam as an ideological alternative.

    (2) Hizb ut-Tahrir is actively contesting the ban on the activities of Hizb ut-Tahrir in Germany. The first court hearing will be at 10 am on Wednesday 21st January 2004 at Bundesverwaltungsgericht 6. Senat, Simsonplatz 1, Leipzig, Germany.

    (3) Interviews with Shaker Assem, the Representative of Hizb ut-Tahrir in Germany, will be available at the demonstration.

    (4) In one case in recent days [15/12/03], German authorities forcibly deported Nizar Jaffar Abdullah Al-Saqqaf, a student from Yemen studying computer science in Frankfurt, after denying him legal representation, handcuffing him and flying him back to Yemen, despite the fact that his visa was valid until 26th September 2004. He was given an ultimatum - spy on Muslims for German intelligence or be deported. Even though he just had three months of his course remaining, he was thrown out of the country like an animal without even being allowed to take his belongings
