fire in greece Firefighters and people are battling against tens of fires raging in the largest part of the country , while efforts to the point of sacrifice are made in Ancient Olympia where flames are threatening the ancient ruins and the museum of Olympia, a world heritage site. According to NET correspondents the fire is approaching the village’s medical center while it has burned many houses. Kronio hill is on fire. Four firefighting aircrafts and four helicopters are dropping water to save the ancient monuments from catching fire. Culture Ministry general secretary, H. Zahopoulos told NET that the ancient site is not threatened. Culture Minister, G. Boulgarakis is going to the region. According to the Fire Department’s last announcement the forest fires have killed 57 people so far and caused extensive environmental and material damage. As of today 13 firefighting aircrafts and helicopters from EU member states have joined Greece’s fleet while according to Foreign Minister, D.Bakoyianni foreign assistance is expected to raise to 31 air means of firefighting. Fire Department regional chief, Nikos Diamantis said that despite the abating of winds and the enforcement of the air firefighting forces it is very difficult to deal with the fires. Agricultural Development, Economics and Employment Ministers announced additional measures for the relief of fire victims. Large fires raging and threatening residential areas are in Elia, Eboia, Messinia, Korinthia, Parnonas and Lakonia.
