A TREATMENT based on the saliva of an endangered lizard could provide a lifeline for people with diabetes. The new drug, which helps regulate blood sugar levels, was synthesised from a chemical found in the spit of the 2ft-long pink gila monster, which lives in the deserts of Mexico. Spending 95 per cent of its life under ground, the gila monster can eat half its body weight in food and needs only three or four meals a year. The drug, Byetta, was inspired by a hormone-like substance in the lizard's saliva which enables it to absorb its food very slowly. Administered in twice-daily injections which come in the form of a single-use pen, Byetta became available in the UK for the first time last week. At a cost of about £70 a month, it will provide an alternative treatment for people with type-two diabetes, which develops later in life.
