Many of us think Mosque is the English translation of Masjid. It is not.
Ever wondered how the word Mosque came into being when it does not sound
    anywhere close to Masjid
    to be an adaptation?
Masjid comes from the word Sajda.
Mosque is a distortion of the Spanish word 'mosquito' which is used as such
in English with the same meaning
    - the insect mosquito.
The Masjid came to be termed Mosque
because King Ferdinand of Spain boasted
that Muslims in Spain would be killed "like mosquitoes".
The places where the Muslims would gather
in large numbers were the Masjids and that is where it was most convenient to attack and murder them.
    To the Spaniards,
taking their lead from their king,
attacking congregations of Muslims in Masjids was indeed like swatting mosquitoes hence the term Mosque - a kind of abbreviation for the place where (Muslim) mosquitoes were best 'swatted' in largest numbers. And with mosquito, mosque was gradually absorbed into English as well.
Mosque thus came to be widely used and accepted as the influence of the Muslims waned and English spread across the world.
Please circulate this as widely as possible

Brother, let me just say something about this.

I've heard this before, and I've even talked to my linguistic professor
about it. It's more likely that the word "mosque" had originated before
the story of the spanish king, in which case the arguement would be
just somebody's idea. I personally haven't spent much time researching
on that topic, but I will In Shaa Allah

    my regards

    TK

    I don't think so

    because if you search

you will never find the word Mosque in arabic dictionary

I know that maybe this story may not be true

but allah called the masjid a masjid in the quran

and that's the only terminology that we muslims should recognize it with

we shouldn't let the foreigners call our place of worship a think that we don't accept

That's the Key point for this post

Thank you T_K For participating and giving your thoughts

and isha allah search for it and bring here so we get benifits

    jazaka allah aljannah

We are not talking about what's in the Dictionary

because these dictionaries states what is known to the people

but from where the name came from and how

That's what we are trying to figure out
